Interfax: Only 20% of Ukrainians support accession to NATO – poll

(Interfax – KYIV, October 17, 2013) Only 20% of Ukrainians support the country’s accession to NATO, according to the Rating sociological group, which held its poll on September 26 – October 6, 2013.

A report published on the Rating website said that two-thirds of Ukrainians thought that Ukraine should not join NATO and 15% were hesitant.

A relative majority of pro-NATO respondents live in Western Ukraine and support Svoboda leader Oleh Tyahnybok and UDAR leader Vitali Klitschko. “Most of the voters supporting these two politicians are men, and men are traditionally inclined to back the entry into NATO more than women,” the report said.

The group polled 2,000 respondents older than 18 during face-to-face interviews throughout Ukraine. The non-sampling error (with a 0.95 probability) is no more than 2.2% for digits close to 50% and no more than 1% for digits close to 5%.
