(Interfax – April 10, 2014) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that he believes that US congressmen, who uphold an anti-Russian position, for example over events in Ukraine, are thus trying to undermine US President Barack Obama’s positions, privately-owned Russian news agency Interfax reported on 10 April.

“A huge number of facts point to the idea that those who uphold a staunchly anti-Russian position in the Congress pursue the main aim, undermining positions of Barack Obama personally and preparing for the next presidential election,” Interfax quoted Lavrov as saying.

“We can see all this. We are taking it philosophically. We are not reacting in some kind of a nervous breakdown. I believe that life will put everything in its place,” Interfax further quoted Lavrov as saying.

Interfax said that this had been Lavrov’s comment on the latest US moves aimed at winding down cooperation in various areas, including work of the presidential commission.

“If it depended on us, there would not be anything. If our American partners, following traditions of American pragmatism in foreign policy and other matters, perceived the reality as it is, the reality which is based on the expression of will by the people of Crimea,” Lavrov said, as quoted by Interfax.

“If we talk about the way in which the US administration is reacting in reality, then – I would say – there is clear confusion, the desire – if you wish – of revenge. On the whole, these are the same forms of reaction which do not result from thorough analysis of the situation. Probably there is some kind of a reflex here in what concerns aspiration of certain political forces in the USA to influence the administration in order not to allow even a question regarding the absolute leadership of the USA in the world in their understanding, not to allow even a thought that somewhere something could happen not according to what has been planned in Washington,” Interfax quoted Lavrov as saying.
