(Interfax – Moscow, January 29, 2015) The USA has already draw Russia into a “cold war”, one cannot rule out that they may “take the risk” of taking further steps towards a real war, former USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev has said.

“Now one keeps hearing about sanctions against Russia from America and the European Union. Have they really completely lost their heads? America has totally ‘lost itself in the jungle’ and is trying to entice us into it,” Gorbachev told Interfax on Thursday [29 January].

“Properly speaking, it has already draw us into a new ‘cold war’, in an attempt to implement its general idea of triumph. And where will all this lead us to? The “cold war” is already openly under way. What is next? Unfortunately, I cannot say for sure any more that the ‘cold war’ will not lead to a ‘hot’ one. I am afraid, they [USA] might risk it,” Gorbachev said.

At the same time, he said that the situation in the USA and the European Union “is by no means simple”. “Some European countries are doing well, others – rather badly, in addition, the dependence on the USA is excessive, including in Germany.”

“The situation is acute, one should not trivialize: the split among politicians is too big. And, unfortunately it is not diminishing, it is growing!” he underlined.
