Interfax: Monument to victims of political repression will be created in Sakharov Prospekt – Pamfilova

MOSCOW. Jan 15 (Interfax) – Russian human rights ombudsman Ella Pamfilova said the Russian administration has decided to erect a monument to victims of Soviet repression on Moscow’s Sakharov Prospekt.

“We discussed several options and we decided that the Sakharov Prospekt is the best place. The president agreed with the proposal made by the working group. A political decision has been made,” Pamfilova told Interfax on Thursday.

Pamfilova said there are several interesting projects for creating the monument. “I believe the events will develop very fest. I would like to hope that the monument will be installed this year, I am confident and I hope for that,” Pamfilova said.

Pamfilova recalled that a working group, which comprises officials from the Russian presidential administration, experts and officials from the Moscow mayor’s office, was created to select a place for the monument on the orders of the Russian president, . Besides Pamfilova, the working group comprises Mikhail Fedotov, the head of the presidential human rights council, and Public Chamber officials.
