MOSCOW. March 14 (Interfax) – The appointment of a new U.S. secretary of state is unlikely to cause relations between Russia and the United States to deteriorate further, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov told the press on Wednesday.

“One can hardly fall lower than the floor. We should not fear the further deterioration [of bilateral relations] in this connection,” Peskov said.

There is still hope for a constructive and sober attitude to bilateral relations, Peskov said. “This hope never dies,” he said.

U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and appointed former CIA Director Mike Pompeo to the position on Tuesday.
