“… [There are] eerie — and alarming — parallels [between the Russian Federation’s leadup to its massive invasion of Ukraine] and … what has been happening … in … Moldova. … [B]etween Romania and Ukraine, this poor, militarily weak former Soviet republic has been partially occupied since 1992 by Russian troops. Moldova Map and FlagThey intervened during a brief civil war, purportedly to ‘protect’ ethnic Russians in [Transnistria,] a territorial sliver next to Ukraine, and, … [as in] the Crimea and Donbas regions of Ukraine … never left. In recent days, Russian state media have trumpeted … bombings and shootings aimed at key targets in … breakaway region … Transnistria, including [one] … just a mile and a half from the Ukrainian border. The ‘attacks’ purportedly emanate from Ukraine, but it’s far likelier Russia engineered them … as a pretext for widening its war. …”

On April 22, a Russian Federation general admitted that the Russian Federation military hopes to seize southern Ukraine and link it up territorially with Transnistria, alleging that the plan aims to prevent Russian-speaking populations from being oppressed.
