MOSCOW. Aug 21 (Interfax) – Russia could return to the G8 format if the latter becomes a G10 and involves China and India, Federation Council Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Konstantin Kosachyov said.

“In my opinion, Russia’s reunion with the G7 would make sense only if we manage to avoid the ‘seven against one’ trap. We should look at the bigger picture. What about considering a drastic modernization of the format and engagement of our Chinese and Indian partners?” Kosachyov said on Facebook in comments on U.S. President Donald Trump’s remark on Russia’s possible comeback to the G8.

Considering the scope of their economies and influence on global politics, China and India have every right to join the format, he said.

Trump said on Tuesday that the G8 format should be restored “because a lot of the things we talk about have to do with Russia.”

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in France on August 19 that Russia was not rejecting any work formats, including the G8, and was always ready to receive partners from the G7.
