Nezavisimaya Gazeta reports that American antiaircraft defense experts have come to Tbilisi, under the framework of the Strategic Partnership Charter of January 2009. The United States aiding Georgia with the development of  antiaircraft forces.

Georgian Defense Minister Dmitry Shashkin called the American visit a fact-finding mission. Next will come an analysis of potential threats and dangers; formulation of doctrine; and implementation of doctrine.

Tbilisi also is looking for American help in the modernization of attack helicopters and training of personnel.

Additional American military experts are therefore expected in Georgia before long.

“Considering existence of a hostile neighbor, development of the antiaircraft system is a matter of paramount importance for national defense,” said Tornike Sharashenidze. “Weak antiaircraft defense cost us defeat in August 2008.”

Other specialists emphasize the importance of military interaction with the United States given the “foreign occupation of some Georgian territories”.
