(Interfax – MOSCOW, August 19, 2013) Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov said a putsch similar to the one that occurred in Russia in August 1991 may repeat itself in Russia if Russia does not change its development direction.

“I have talked to many Middle Eastern leaders and they said go on like this if you want, the Yeltsin tragedy will repeat itself. It’s either we choose a new course, a new team – the current government is incapable of solving problems – or we follow the young ‘Yeltsins,’ but sober,” Zyuganov told a press conference in Moscow on Monday.

Today is the 22nd anniversary of the August 1991 putsch, when an attempt was made to remove Mikhail Gorbachev who was then president of the Soviet Union, from his post and reverse the perestroika policies pursued by him, he said.

“There was not such drug abuse, stealing, and organized crime in the country before the putsch,” Zyuganov said.

Zyuganov said he currently does not see politicians who are capable of pulling the country out of the current crisis. “I would not like people to be deceived again. There are no people who are capable of pulling the country out of the crisis. There are modern political technologists, but they can’t decide how to help,” he said.
