(Interfax – Moscow, April 1, 2013) Russian Prime Minister Dmitriy Medvedev has congratulated the editorial staff of Novaya Gazeta on the 20th anniversary of the publication, saying that “it is precisely such independent and responsible journalism that modern Russia needs”. (Novaya Gazeta is a liberal newspaper often critical of the authorities and known for its investigative journalism and focus on human rights issues)

“A bright, professional group of like-minded people works here. It is important that you raise pressing issues that worry people. You have deep understanding of the problems you write about; you give on the pages of your publication various opinions and positions. Novaya Gazeta articles often generate broad public discussion. It is precisely such independent and responsible journalism that modern Russia needs,” reads the prime minister’s message.

“I wish you luck and success. You set yourselves a high target from the very beginning. I am sure that that is the way it will be in the future!” wrote Medvedev.
