MOSCOW. Dec 6 (Interfax) – Over half of all deaths in Russia are associated with eating low-quality food and the wrong nutrition, Rospotrebnadzor said in a report released on Thursday.

“The idea of labeling [products] is due to Rospotrebnadzor’s concerns about the high rate of diseases associated with eating among the country’s population. About 63% of all deaths in Russia are associated with alimentary-dependent diseases [caused by poor nutrition], and obesity is 2.-2.5 times more frequent among women than among men,” it said.

According to Rospotrebnadzor, “the high intake of sugar, saturated fatty acids, and salt leads to the development of cardiovascular diseases, arterial hypertension, and diabetes. To reduce the consumption of salt, sugar, and fat, it is necessary to inform consumers about the composition of products using the most accessible methods so that every person can make a conscious decision regarding what products can be eaten virtually without restriction and what should be eaten in moderate amounts,” the agency said.
