Eighty-one per cent of Russians regard corruption as a “serious problem”, though only 11 per cent claim they see progress being made to combat it, a survey compiled by the Prosecutor General’s Office indicated.

“Participants in the survey evaluated the level of corruption in the field of state and municipal property at 78 per cent, 77 per cent in the law enforcement system, 75 per cent in the field of state and municipal regulators and 78 per cent in the judicial system,” said Alexander Kurennoy, a representative for the prosecutor’s office.

State procurement, education and healthcare had a lower perceived level of corruption according to the survey’s results, Kurennoy said.

The survey was carried out by the prosecution’s anti-corruption department and presented by Kurennoy on the prosecution’s official video channel Efir, Interfax news agency reported.

Kurennoy claimed that “the majority of respondents voiced approval for the government’s policy of tightening measures with regards to corrupt officials”.

Kurennoy said 85 per cent of respondents believed that a majority of mass media outlets is keeping quiet about corruption, while 75 per cent of them learn about instances of corruption from the media, internet and social media.
