MOSCOW. March 13 (Interfax) – The birth rate in Russia grew by over 10% year-on-year this January.

“Some 158,900 babies were born in January 2013 or 15,100 (10.5%) more babies than the year before. That was the highest January birth rate since the launch of the demographic program. Birth rates tend to be lower in the first month of the year,” the ministry said on Wednesday.

Most of the Russian regions reported an increase in births. The growth was higher than 15% in 18 regions, including the Kaliningrad region, Ingushetia and Tatarstan. The birth rate grew from 10% to 15% in 23 regions, among them the Rostov, Kirov, Saratov, Oryol, Tyumen and Magadan regions, the Krasnoyarsk and Primorsky territories and St. Petersburg.

Twenty-seven regions reported the birth rate growth of 5-10%, the ministry said.
