KYIV. March 22 (Interfax) – The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has demanded that Ukrainian military pilot Nadiya Savchenko’s conviction be reversed and she be freed.

“We view this judicial farce as yet another undeniable evidence of the Russian Federation’s failure to comply with the Minsk Agreements,” the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a statement in Kyiv on Tuesday.

“The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry demands that Russia immediately reverse the unlawful and inhumane decision, and immediately free Nadiya Savchenko. We also demand the release of all Ukrainian citizens who are being held unlawfully, and who are political hostages and victims of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine,” it said.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry expressed its “firm and categorical protest” against the fact that a Russian court sentenced Savchenko to 22 years in prison, seeing this as “undeniable evidence that there is no point in looking for justice in modern Russia.”

Being guided by political motives, Russia disregards fundamental norms and principles of international law on the protection of human rights and freedoms, as well as its own laws, humanity, justice, and elementary moral norms, it said.

“The court’s unlawful judgment is based on fabricated investigation materials,” it said.

This gross violation of universal norms and a PACE member’s immunity by Russia is a clear signal to the international community that trampling upon fundamental principles and norms by a country that is a permanent UN Security Council member is unacceptable, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry called on the international community “to publicly denounce this crime” and step up pressure on Russia to make it “stop its aggression against Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and also against Ukrainian citizens.”

“We are convinced that all those responsible for fabricating the Nadiya Savchenko case will be held liable. To this end, the Ukrainian side will continue to work to consolidate our partners’ support for the Savchenko list,” it said.Kyiv sees Savchenko’s conviction as Moscow’s failure to comply with Minsk Agreements – Foreign Ministry statement
