ASTANA. Apr 1 (Interfax) – The only way to resolve the Ukrainian crisis lies through diplomacy and defusing of military tensions in the region, United States Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Desai Biswal said.

Today the world is watching the events in Ukraine with great concern. The U.S. and the international community advocate the support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and are ready to help the Ukrainian people in building a stable, democratic and prospering country which they have fully deserved, she said at a meeting with the alumni and faculty of the L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University in Astana on Tuesday.

We believe that the only way to resolve this crisis lies through diplomacy and defusing of military tensions, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State said.

We shall continue working with the United Nations, with European partners, with the OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation), and with Russia in searching for a peaceful way that lies within the framework of the international law, Biswal said.

We believe that the Ukrainian people, like other peoples in the region, does not have to choose between friendship with Russia and broadening its relations with the rest of the world, she said.

The U.S. wishes the same for Kazakhstan, for Central Asia and for all our partners across the world, she also said.
