Interfax: Russian Labor Ministry reports natural population growth in 2014

MOSCOW. Dec 19 (Interfax) – A natural population growth in Russia stood at 37,100 in January-October 2014, Labor and Social Protection Minister Maxim Topilin said.

“On the whole, natural population growth amounted to 37,100 people in January-October 2014. It grew by 23,200 persons compared with the relevant period of 2013,” the ministry press service quoted Topilin as saying on Friday.

Natural population growth continued in October 2014 and reached 9,900 people. “Natural population growth was recorded in 43 regions. There was natural population growth overall in the North Caucasian, Urals, Siberian and Far Eastern Federal Districts,” the minister stated.

Assessing birth rates, Topilin said that 1,635,000 babies were born in January-October of this year, 19,600 more than the year before. “The number of newborns has grown in 51 regions. A birth rate growth of 5% or more was recorded in such territories as the Tyumen and Moscow regions, the Krasnodar territory, the Chukchi autonomous region and the city of Sevastopol,” the minister said.

A total of 177,300 babies were born in October 2014.

As to the mortality rate, 1,598,000 people died in January-October 2014. “The rates declined by 4% or more in a number of regions, among them the Kirov, Tver and Novgorod regions, the Republic of Mordovia and the Nenets autonomous region,” Topilin said.

A total of 166,400 people died in October 2014. “This is 5,200 persons or 3% less than in October 2013,” the minister said.
