Interfax: Most Russians unaware of ISIL, others see it as threat to peace, Russia – poll

MOSCOW. Oct 9 (Interfax) – Only 13% of Russians are aware of the existence of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and 54% learned about it during a poll held by the Public Opinion Foundation.

Another 26% of 1,500 respondents polled in 43 regions on September 28 had heard something about the ISIL, and 7% failed to answer the question.

Those aware of ISIL believe that the goal of this organization is “terrorism, extremism, threats and intimidation” (12%) and “propaganda of world dominance by Islam and the creation of an Islamic caliphate” (6%).

In the opinion of 27% of Russians who know about ISIL, this organization presents a threat to international security. Five percent have the opposite opinion and 7% are undecided.

Twenty-two percent of the respondents said the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant threatened the security of Russia, 11% had the opposite opinion and 5% were undecided.

As to whether Russia should join the struggle against the ISIL, 16% gave an affirmative answer, 12% answered negatively and 11% were hesitant.
