If you want my opinion on who is to blame for the tragedy in Ukraine, I can tell in two words: nationalist journalists. I have been reading Ukrainian press since the early 1990s. The amount of negative stereotypes about the people from Donetsk was astounding (now it is going through the roof). There were even more negative stereotypes about Russians, but it is not so tragic, since we are behind the border. We also had and have nationalist press in Russia, but it chose its “targets” mostly according to the political criteria: pro-Western liberals, corrupt officials, in the early 1990s even Jewish journalists (thank God, nothing happened to them then, and now this trend is almost non-existent). So, the nationalist Russian press, terrible as it was and is (Prokhanov, Rogozin – these guys are nationalists, not patriots) never targeted ethnic or regional groups. It is impossible that it would say that some region (like Donetsk and Lugansk in the eyes of Ukrainian nationalist journalists) is “preventing us from going to Europe” or “makes our life unbearable” by voting for the Party of Regions. In Ukraine there was this attitude for many years. We see the terrible results right now.
