(Interfax – April 24, 2014) The USA and the EU have tried to carry out a “colour revolution” in Ukraine, Russia Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said, as reported by privately-owned news agency Interfax on 24 April.

Speaking at the Moscow State Institute for International Relations, Lavrov sai d: “Let’s call a spade a spade, the USA and the EU have tried in Ukraine to carry out another ‘colour revolution’, an operation on the unconstitutional change of regime.”

“At that, few serious analysts doubt that the question is not so much about the fate of Ukraine but the fact that they have simply used and keep trying to use Ukraine as a pawn in a geopolitical game, ” Lavrov said.

“Our Western partners do not care about the fact that the attempt to implement their ideas with the help of authorities that rely, in fact, on ultra-nationalist, neo-Nazi forces is a completely unfeasible variant,” he added.

“Accusations against Russia that, by responding to the free expression of will of Crimeans, it undermined the spirit of partnership in Europe are not worth the paper they are written on,” he said.

On the same day, state-owned news agency RIA Novosti quoted him as blaming the USA for not taking Russia’s position in European matters into acco unt.

“Our Western partners, and the USA in the first place, have tried to behave like winners in the Cold War and make believe and one does not need to take Russia into account in European matters and may undertake actions directly damaging the interests of Russian security,” he said.

He also accused the West of anti-Russian propaganda that started unfolding long before the Ukrainian crisis.

“It is enough to recall the hysterical anti-Russian propaganda that has swept the USA and Europe long before the events in Ukraine started, the desire to blacken the Sochi Olympics at any cost,” he said.
