MOSCOW. Nov 7 (Interfax) – Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said following the midterm elections in the United States that relations between the two countries are unlikely to improve but that Russia still wants a dialogue with the U.S.

“It can be assumed with a high degree of certainty that, of course, there are no rosy prospects of the normalization of Russian-U.S. relations on the horizon. But this does not mean that we do not seek a dialogue, we do not want a dialogue,” Peskov told reporters on Wednesday.

The two countries have many issues to resolve, which makes discussion necessary, he said.

“These are issues of strategic stability and arms control. These issues cannot go away on their own, without a conversation,” Peskov said.

Moscow does not have the slightest intention to interfere in the current domestic political situation in Washington, he said.

“President Putin has his counterpart, President Trump, and it’s up to them to continue contacts,” Peskov said when asked whether he thinks it will be easier for the heads of states to continue their contacts given the changed domestic political situation in the U.S. following the midterms.
