MOSCOW, October 30 (RIA Novosti) Russia and China reaffirmed their intention to work together in dealing with global challenges during a meeting Wednesday between Russia’s Defense Minister and a top Chinese military commissioner.

“The consolidated position of our governments has a stabilizing influence on the international situation,” Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said at the start of talks with Xu Qiliang, deputy chairman of China’s Central Military Commission. “The high level of mutual trust is reinforced by the concrete, practical results of [our] work in this area.”

Shoigu said the officials would discuss the military and political situation in global hot spots and the rest of the world, as well as the prospects for future Sino-Russian military cooperation.

Russia and China, two veto-wielding UN Security Council members, have most recently joined forces in the political arena to block three UN resolutions condemning Syrian President Bashar Assad over the ongoing civil war there.

Last week, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed a raft of energy deals between the two countries during a visit to Beijing, and in March, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Moscow to shore up plans for further economic cooperation with Russia.
