(Interfax -ST. PETERSBURG, June 20, 2013) It would be feasible to introduce a progressive income tax scale in Russia in 2018, when the current political cycle ends, First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov told reporters on the sidelines of the St Petersburg Economic Forum.

“It would probably make sense to make the transition to different taxation for personal income from 2018, when this political cycle ends, because we have pledged that the tax system will be very stable during this political cycle,” Shuvalov said.

He said arguments over the feasibility of a progressive income tax scale were never-ending.

“Society will be in a totally different state in 2018 and the role that the flat rate has played or is playing, that role will probably be exhausted,” he said.

The issue will have to be discussed with the government and with the public, he said.
