(Business New Europe – bne.eu – February 12, 2014) 28% support President Viktor Yanukovych in the Ukrainian standoff and only 6% side with the opposition, the Public Opinion Foundation said after having polled 1,000 people in 320 cities and 160 villages on February 1-2.

Some 36% denied supporting either of the conflicting sides.

A total of 75% of the respondents told the sociologists they had learned about the Ukrainian events from television, 23% from the Internet and 8% from newspapers, the radio, family and friends.

12% said a compromise would be a way out of the Ukrainian altercation, 9% said the authorities would win and Yanukovych would restore order, and 9% expect the situation to normalize.

In the opinion of 7% of the respondents, Ukraine may be facing a civil war, and 4% do not rule out a coup, a revolution or a change of administration. 3% say Ukraine may split, elect a new president or change nothing. Only 2% percent bet on the victory of the Ukrainian opposition.
