Forbes and Mark Adomanis examine the Russian demographic situation:

Just to be clear, the fact that Russia eked out a minuscule level of natural population growth does not mean that it is poised to reemerge as a continent-spanning colossus or that there is any chance that it will successfully re-animate the Soviet Union’s rotted carcass. Russia’s population isn’t going to suddenly surge into self sustaining rapid growth. Indeed the most likely scenario is that Russia’s population is going to be basically stable for a few years and then start declining again as the tiny cohort  born during the lean 1990’s enters prime child-bearing years. The current environment, then, is best seen not as the end of Russia’s demographic crisis  but as something of a respite, a temporary pause whose ultimate meaning is still totally unclear.

But while saying “Russia’s population will be basically stable for a few years and then start to slowly decline again” doesn’t sound particularly radical, it’s positively wild-eyed when you compare it to what some of the leading experts on the matter say. …
