“… The Trump administration has a tough policy on Russia, one that I mostly support. But Trump himself does not. For the past two years, he has consistently made it clear that he does not support his own administration’s policy toward Russia. The Trump administration’s National Security Strategy states very bluntly that ‘China and Russia challenge American power, influence, and interests, attempting to erode American security and prosperity.’ Trump, however, has never expressed support for this approach. He has said the exact opposite, suggesting time and time again that he wants to be … Putin’s friend, and that ‘getting along with Russia is a good thing, not a bad thing.’ * * * I cannot remember a policy … toward Russia or any other country … [with] such a wide gap between a presidential administration and the [P]resident himself. … The important question … is not which U.S. [P]resident has been tougher on Russia, but why our current [P]resident has gone to such great lengths to distance himself from his own government’s Russia policy.”File Photo of White House with South Lawn and Fountain
