ROSTOV-ON-DON. May 29 (Interfax) – Viktor Yanukovych has said that he believed the continuation of the violent operation in southeast Ukraine after the presidential election was a bad omen.

“This is a very bad sign – to start a presidential path from such a bloody, deadly firework show which causes the ire and curses from mothers who see their children, husbands and fathers dying and suffering,” Yanukovych said in a statement issued in Rostov-on-Don on Thursday.

“What people expected from the new authorities was first and foremost peace,” Yanukovych said. “Most Ukrainians believed that with the arrival of the new authorities the political crisis will be solved and a peaceful period will begin – the people are tired of standoffs which have turned into real war,” the statement said.

Yanukovych believes that after the presidential election came “a surprise, or rather shock: instead of peace and stability – a bloody massacre.”
