Interfax: Russia’s grain harvest tops 105 million tons in 2014

(Interfax – January 8, 2014) Agriculture Minister Nikolai Fyodorov has reported a record grain harvest of 105.3 million tonnes collected in Russia in 2014.

“According to updated reports, Russian agrarians produced 105.3 million tonnes [of grain] in what people call granary weight,” he said at a meeting with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

The premier said the previous year “was rather fortunate for agriculture” and the second best result in the post-Soviet history was achieved.

Russia is now feeding 39.6 million tonnes of grain to cattle and poultry a year compared to the previous 37 million tonnes which is a sign of herd expansion, the minister added.

Speaking of the harvest of other crops, Fyodorov said the country collected 15.45 million tonnes of vegetables last year which was “an absolute record in the newest history of Russia.” Besides, farmers produced 2.54 million tonnes of soy and 1.47 million tonnes of rape.
