Imposing political models on other states leads to escalation of int’l instability – Lavrov

MOSCOW. Oct 23 (Interfax) – Namely the United States urged at some point to prevent organizations under its control from actions, which could undermine the security of another country or which are aimed at changing political regimes, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Washington.

Everyone who is currently attempting to interfere in the domestic affairs of other countries should be reminded of this, Lavrov said.

During the event dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Moscow conference of the Soviet, U.S. and British foreign ministers Lavrov referred to the exchange of letters between U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt and Soviet People’s Commissar for Foreign Affairs Maxim Litvinov over the introduction of diplomatic ties between the U.S. and Soviet Union in November 1933.

“In particular, these letters discussed the indisputable right of each country to arrange life within its territory upon its own judgment and mutual obligations to refrain from any interference in internal affairs. The Soviet and U.S. governments also took the obligation ‘to refrain from, and to restrain all persons in government service and all organizations of the government or under its direct or indirect control, including organizations in receipt of any financial assistance from it, from any act overt or covert liable in any way whatsoever to injure the tranquility, prosperity, order, or security — from any act tending to incite or encourage armed intervention, or any agitation or propaganda — or the bringing about by force of a change in the political or social order’,” Lavrov said.

“I want to note that these obligations have been developed and stipulated in the letters from the United States’ side. And probably all those, who are promoting the concepts of unilateral and uncalled interferences in the domestic affairs of other countries and directing various democratic revolutions, should not forget about this today. The attempts to impose your own political, social and economic models on others can have one result – deepening international instability,” Lavrov said.

“Today the world is going through a very difficult period related to large-scale global challenges. It is possible to respond to them adequately solely with the joint efforts of the entire global community. It is not necessary to wait until the situation becomes similar to the events 70 years ago in order to realize this truth,” Lavrov said. “Russian-U.S. cooperation over the Syrian crisis shows that this task is difficult but quite doable,” the minister said.

The Moscow conference was held 70 years ago in the mansion of the Russian Foreign Ministry, where Lavrov spoke on Wednesday.
