Potential global conflict is Russians’ greatest fear, a report by state-run pollster the Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM) has announced.

VTsIOM’s annual “fear index” rates common anxieties among the Russian population from 100 to -100.

Global tensions, conflict and war took the top slot as Russians’ main worry with a ranking of 25 points, up from 11 points in October last year.

Anxiety on domestic issues was also reported as being on the rise. Concerns linked to inflation and rising prices came in second place with 16 points, while the fear of crime surged by five points.

Some 1,600 people were interviewed for the index in 130 Russian settlements. The margin of error does not exceed 3.5 percent.
