(Business New Europe – bne/IntelliNews – bne.eu – November 19, 2014) According to a poll conducted by the independent Levada centre, 39% of Russians think that corruption in the country got worse in last 15 years. That is 20% less than in July 2010, when 60% of respondents said the situation worsened.

Traffic police are considered the most corrupt institution by 43% of respondents (53% in 2002), followed by policemen (39% vs 52% in 2002), and custom service workers (35% vs 48%). About one third of Russians think local MPs, mayors, governors, judges are most corrupt.

Only 8% said that President Putin is the most corrupt (10% in 2002), and even fewer (6%) blame him for corruption in Russia. 34% said he was probably responsible, 31% said that even if he was corrupt it’s more important that life got better since he became president. 18% refused to believe Putin ever abused his power.

At the same time, people are pessimistic about Putin’s prospect to conquer corruption. Only 26% believe he will succeed (27% in 2012 poll), 19% said it’s unlikely as president himself is dependent on corrupt officials. Most respondents (38% vs 35% in 2012) said Putin would fail because corruption in Russia can’t be eradicated.
